How GPA Works

Understanding your GPA calculation

📐

GPA Formula

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours for each course.

⚖️

Weighted vs Unweighted

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 for all courses. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, reflecting course difficulty.

🌍

Global Scales

US/Canada uses 4.0. Some US schools use 5.0 weighted. Australia/NZ often use 7.0. India and many EU countries use 10.0 or percentage.

📈

Cumulative GPA

Your overall GPA is the quality-point-weighted average across all semesters — not a simple average of semester GPAs.

Academic Tips

Boost your academic standing

🎯

Set a target first

Use the GPA Planner to reverse-engineer exactly what grades you need — before the semester starts, not after.

📦

Credit hours matter

A 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one. Prioritise high-credit courses when struggling.

🔄

Grade replacement

Many schools allow retaking a course to replace the grade. Use the Cumulative Merger to model the impact before deciding.

📋

Dean's List planning

Dean's List typically requires 3.2–3.5 per semester. Use the planner each term to see exactly what's needed.
